Minding the Gap
Happy New Year! Did you make resolutions? Last year I gave a couple of seminars to help attendees make and keep meaningful resolutions. I think it is interesting that the two-headed god (one looking backwards to the past, and one looking forward to the future) was the Roman derivation of January.
Typically we set goals after evaluating where we are, and contrasting that to where we want to be. The gap between current and desired state is what needs to be narrowed, if not closed. In London's subway system they have signs everywhere telling riders to "mind the gap" -- the opening between the train car and the subway stop floor -- when entering and exiting the train. They also announce it when the trains arrive. Mind the gap.
Good advice, I think. Don't worry about where you are, rather focus on the gap between where you are and where you want to be, and put your effort into action plans to close the gap.
All the best in 2008!
